Letterform construction with a play of negative and positive spaces.

LETTERFORMS CONSTRUCTED DURING THE TYPE CHALLENGE '36 DAYS OF TYPE 2022'
Brief
36 Days of Type was a yearly type challenge where participants designed letters in their own style every day for 36 days. I set myself a brief where I wanted to create a geometric system out of the 36 letters and numbers with very little flexibility.
Concept
The idea was to allow limited flexibility in breaking the grid to create 36 different-looking letterforms. I carved out the letters by drawing minimum lines inside the grid and the letters emerged from the negative space created. My inspiration here was the way some Indian ethnicities create traditional symbols by drawing through a layer of rice.
Process
I drew lines through blocks within a 5X5 grid in such a way that the negative space created letterforms as visualised. I then refined their form by bringing in curved corners to define the form. I further added shadows behind the letterforms to create a block.
