Design for Udaan's journal and games book that serves as a workbook along with informative charts.
ROLE
BOOK DESIGN & ILLUSTRATION
CLIENT
UDAAN KIDS
Brief
Udaan is an organisation that works with underprivileged children with Type-1 diabetes. They teach children about daily habits, routine care and much more for a better lifestyle. During the lockdown in 2020, it became hard for the children to visit the clinics where a lot of this work is done. The journal was designed to cater to this need so the children could keep track of their diet, habits, medicines and other information.
Concept
The concept of the journal is simple. It has 52 pages for 52 weeks. Each spread of the journal has a working area on the left to calculate insulin intake and calories, and on the right, there is a table where daily data can be recorded. The bottom part of the right page has information that acts as directions for children to remember. The journal basically acts as a knowledge bank and a data sheet to keep a track of one's health.
Process
The book's primary language was Marathi so it was necessary to choose the right font that would be easy to read for children. I used a limited colour palette with bright colours resembling children's textbooks and the kinds of charts one sees in most government schools for familiarity with the content. After some initial explorations in illustrative styles, the final book had simple, dotted line illustrations with solid colours.

The Games Book
The T1-D book was a huge success for Udaan and it was also made available to other organisations outside of Udaan. To build on this, Dr Archana (Founder, Udaan) wanted to create a book of games that Udaan has designed to help them get educated on T1-D and take care of themselves physically and mentally. This book had the same style as the journal that was designed earlier and introduced newer colours. This too is an open source document available to others dealing with similar experiences as Udaan.
